Why do we need Water Filters
Water filters are becoming a necessity even in rural New Zealand as more of our ground water becomes polluted with pesticides and nutrients from farm run-off. We are all, more aware of the importance of chemical free drinking water. Whatever the source of your water - from a bore or your roof, or treated City water contaminated with Chlorine, the need for filtration is the same.
We all would benefit from some form of water filtration to improve the quality and taste of our water supply. If you are on town water then the unpleasant taste will most likely be chlorine.
If you are using tank water and your water is discoloured or smells then your problem is most likely is rotting leaves or pollen from nearby pine trees, as well you can expect bacteria contamination from animal waste, rats, possums, birds... also your water can contain impurities from the zinc coating on roofing iron, aged peeling paint and lead from roof fixings and lead flashings .
This contamination can be reduced/removed with the help of one of our filters or filtration packages
Chlorine is a Health Hazard
(Town Supply)
In the past adding Chlorine to community water supplies was a relatively simple but crucial step in eradicating water-borne diseases, such as Cholera and Typhoid. Before chlorination, many cities around the world reported death tolls of 1 in 1000 people from Typhoid fever alone.Chlorine has been used in community based water supplies for more than 80 years with positive effects. Though in the early 70′s scientists found that chlorine added to water forms Trihalomethanes these chlorination by-products are now known to be harmful.
The National Cancer Institute estimates the risk of cancer for people who use chlorinated water is up to 93% higher than those who don’t use chlorinated water. The negative effects from chlorinated water has been hotly debated for years. Though most experts agree... significant risks stem from chlorine and chlorinated by-products in our water supply.
Prevention:
Effective removal of chlorine using Carbon Block, GAC, KDF/GAC and Chlora Guard filtration will help reduce and remove Chlorine
E Coli, Giardia and Cryptosporidium
(Tank Water)
Water collected from the roof has long been a favoured source of household water, especially in rural areas, it is often considered the healthy natural option. However the issues are in the collection, transferring and storage of your tank water. Any fecal matter washed of the roof (from bird or possum, rats etc.) has e-coli present, this can cause severe medical conditions, Giardia and Cryptosporidium also enter your water supply this way.
Prevention:
Ultra Violet sterilization is the most effective method for treating tank water that is carrying bacteria, viruses or e-coli. Ask about our UV systems and options today!
VOC’s (Volatile Organic Chemicals)
Volatile Organic Chemicals are synthetic compounds that turn into vapor at relatively low temperatures. Most synthetic chemicals found in water supplies come from farm or orchard run off, such as pesticides and herbicides.VOCs have been known to cause central nervous system depression (drowsiness, stupor). All VOC’s are a skin irritant as well as irritate the mucous membranes when inhaled.
Prevention:
Granular activated carbon (GAC) filters are typically used to reduce VOC levels in water supply
